Historyarrow

Colorado Avalanche is one of the most popular ice hockey teams in the world, with one of the highest average home attendances in the National Hockey League (NHL). The team states that its worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Colorado Avalanche Fan Club (CAFC), in at least 24 countries. The team takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Colorado Avalanche has 75 million fans worldwide. The team has the third highest social media following in the world among sports teams (after Los Angeles Lakers and New York Yankees), with over 82 million Facebook followers as of July 2023. A 2014 study showed that Colorado Avalanche had the loudest fans in the NHL.

Early years (1972–1995)

Colorado Avalanche was formed in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques in the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team initially played games against other WHA teams, but on 20 November 1972, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colours of the team—blue and white—they achieved a notable victory against the Winnipeg Jets.

Stanley Cup successes (1996–2001)

In the 1995-96 NHL season, the team, now known as the Colorado Avalanche, secured their first Stanley Cup under the leadership of head coach Marc Crawford. Crawford demanded an unprecedented level of control over team selection, player transfers, and training sessions. Crawford led the team to another Stanley Cup victory in 2001.

Post-Sakic years and struggles (2009–present)

On 8 May 2009, Joe Sakic announced that he was to retire as a player at the end of the ice hockey season, but would remain at the club as an executive advisor and alternate governor. He retired as one of the most decorated players in ice hockey history. The club announced the next day that Patrick Roy would replace him from 1 July, having signed a multi-year contract. Jared Bednar took over as head coach in August 2016, when Roy resigned after a few seasons in which the club struggled to achieve significant success.

Initially funded by the Comsat Corporation, the Colorado Avalanche became a part of the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment in 2000. The Comsat Corporation, a telecommunication company, originally founded the team in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques before relocating and renaming it as the Colorado Avalanche in 1995. Post the relocation, the team quickly found success and won two Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001, under the leadership of key players like Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy.

With the passing of time, in July 2000, Stanley Kroenke, an American businessman and entrepreneur, bought the Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, and the Pepsi Center. Kroenke, who already owned the NFL's St. Louis Rams, purchased these Colorado-based sports franchises through his company, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. The company manages the day-to-day operations of the teams and the Pepsi Center. His wife, Ann Walton Kroenke, inherited her ownership stake in these teams following the NFL's cross-ownership rule that forced Stanley to transfer his ownership.

Stanley's son, Josh Kroenke, is currently the President and Governor of the Avalanche, and under his leadership, the team has seen a resurgence in recent years. Despite facing various challenges, the Kroenke family has remained committed to maintaining the Avalanche's competitive edge and promoting the sport of hockey in Colorado. Over the years, they have invested significantly in player development, coaching staff, and facilities to ensure the team's continued success.

Throughout its history, the Colorado Avalanche has remained financially stable, thanks to consistent support from its dedicated fan base, lucrative broadcasting deals, and significant revenue from ticket and merchandise sales. The team's financial performance and on-ice success have made it one of the most valuable franchises in the National Hockey League.
