How the NBA Is Using AI and AWS to Transform the Fan Experience in 2026

How the NBA Is Using AI and AWS to Transform the Fan Experience in 2026

From AI-powered basketball analytics and automated game reports to personalised viewing experiences, the NBA is expanding its partnership with Amazon Web Services to change how millions of fans watch, understand and interact with basketball.

New York, 2 November 2026 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) is bringing artificial intelligence deeper into professional basketball, introducing new digital experiences that combine real-time player tracking, advanced statistics, personalised streaming and AI-powered assistance. Working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the league is developing technologies designed to make basketball more interactive and accessible to fans around the world.

On 19 October 2026, the NBA announced a series of enhancements for the 2026–27 season, including a new AI-powered basketball assistant called AskNBA, a live game experience known as Game Pulse, and expanded analytics through NBA Inside the Game powered by AWS. The updates also include automated pregame and postgame reports, improved navigation within the NBA App and new ways for viewers to follow multiple games simultaneously.

These developments build on the NBA's existing partnership with AWS, which is helping the league turn large volumes of player-tracking information into meaningful insights. Rather than relying exclusively on conventional statistics such as points, rebounds and assists, the NBA is increasingly using machine learning to examine the movements, decisions and contributions that influence basketball games.

AWS and the NBA Are Building a New Generation of Basketball Analytics

The NBA's partnership with AWS extends beyond cloud infrastructure. Its basketball intelligence platform, NBA Inside the Game, uses AI and machine learning to analyse player movements and provide insights into aspects of performance that traditional statistics cannot fully capture.

The technology processes information collected during NBA games, including player positions, ball movements and contextual events. According to AWS, its underlying analytics systems combine tracking, event and performance data to generate information that can be used in live broadcasts, digital platforms and interactive fan experiences.

For the 2026–27 season, the NBA is introducing Handle Score, a new advanced statistic designed to evaluate the style and effectiveness of individual dribble moves. Another development is a zone defence model that examines how frequently teams deploy zone defensive strategies and how successfully they execute them. These measurements are intended to make more complex elements of basketball understandable to audiences who may not have access to professional coaching or analytics tools.

The technology also builds on previously introduced AI-powered statistics such as Shot Difficulty, Defensive Box Score and Gravity. These metrics provide additional context about defensive pressure, shot selection and the influence players exert on opposing defenders, offering a more detailed picture of performance than traditional box scores alone.

AskNBA and Game Pulse Bring AI-Powered Insights Directly to Fans

One of the most significant additions to the NBA's digital ecosystem is AskNBA, an AI-powered basketball assistant that allows fans to explore games, player performances, statistical trends and other basketball information through natural-language questions.

The assistant draws on official NBA data and newly developed advanced statistics, making it easier for supporters to investigate the details behind a particular matchup or performance. Instead of searching through multiple statistical tables, fans can use the assistant to explore information about players, teams and developments on the court.

Alongside AskNBA, the NBA has introduced Game Pulse, a live experience within the NBA App that combines real-time highlights, player and team milestones, shot charts and quarter-by-quarter statistics. The feature also provides contextual information about important moments during games, helping users understand how momentum and individual performances develop.

Game Pulse is designed both for viewers following live games and for those wanting to catch up on the action. Throughout the season, the NBA also plans to incorporate perspectives from former players, including Gary Payton, Muggsy Bogues, Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah, alongside basketball creators.

Together, these tools represent an expansion of the NBA's digital strategy, combining statistical information, expert commentary and AI-powered exploration within a more connected viewing experience.

NBA Blueprint Uses AI to Explain the Story Behind Every Game

Another addition is NBA Blueprint, which uses artificial intelligence to generate pregame and postgame reports for every matchup. The reports highlight statistical advantages, relevant performance patterns and major storylines, giving fans an accessible explanation of what to watch before tipoff and what influenced the result afterward.

These AI-generated insights will also appear within Game Pulse, connecting automated analysis with live game information. The approach makes advanced basketball analytics more widely accessible, particularly for viewers who want to understand tactics and performance without examining extensive statistical databases.

The NBA and AWS have also developed Leverage Score, an AI-powered metric that evaluates how individual possessions and player contributions affect the probability of winning. According to AWS, the underlying model was trained on approximately 3,700 games and 500,000 possessions, demonstrating the scale of information involved in modern basketball analytics.

Personalised Streaming and Easier Access to Live NBA Games

The NBA's technology strategy extends into streaming and content discovery. For the 2026–27 season, NBA League Pass is introducing Auto-Play Next, a feature that recommends another matchup when a game finishes, helping viewers continue watching without manually searching for another broadcast.

The league is also enhancing its multiview experience through Multiview Focus Mode, allowing fans to concentrate on one game while watching as many as three additional matchups. A personalised multiview card will present four games based on the teams users follow, while AI-assisted navigation will help supporters find scores, schedules and standings within the NBA App.

Beyond its own platforms, the NBA is expanding Tap to Watch, which connects basketball content on social media and other digital channels to live broadcasts. The initiative includes links on TikTok content mentioning #NBA, participating creator posts and additional integrations with Google and X. These developments are intended to reduce the distance between discovering basketball content and finding an available live broadcast.

What AI-Powered Basketball Means for the Future of Sports

The NBA's work with AWS reflects a wider development in professional sport, where digital platforms are becoming important sources of analysis, entertainment and audience engagement. Player-tracking technologies and machine learning can provide additional context around performances, while automated reporting and interactive assistants allow fans to explore information at a level previously associated with broadcasters and professional analysts.

However, AI-generated statistics also introduce questions about interpretation and transparency. Metrics such as Shot Difficulty, Gravity and Leverage Score depend on mathematical models and assumptions. Although they can reveal details missing from traditional statistics, they remain analytical estimates rather than definitive judgments about individual players or team performances.

For sports organisations, the challenge is making these increasingly complex technologies genuinely useful to audiences. Accurate information, understandable explanations and reliable delivery will be essential as more AI-driven features enter mainstream sports broadcasts and applications.

The NBA's 2026–27 digital expansion provides an example of how a major sports league is approaching that challenge. By combining AWS-powered analytics, AI assistance, automated reporting and personalised viewing options, basketball fans are being offered more ways to explore what happens on the court.

The longer-term significance will depend on whether these features improve how audiences engage with the sport. For the NBA, the objective is no longer simply to provide access to games and traditional statistics, but to make the data behind basketball more accessible, interactive and relevant to fans worldwide.
