The International Skating Union (ISU) is the governing body for ice skating sports, including figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. Founded in 1892, the ISU is responsible for the regulation and promotion of these disciplines at both national and international levels. The organisation develops rules and regulations, coordinates competitions, and establishes standards for judging and officiating.
The ISU oversees a range of major events, including the World Figure Skating Championships, the World Speed Skating Championships, and the ISU World Cup series. It also plays a pivotal role in the Olympic Games, where figure skating and speed skating events are featured. The ISU works closely with National Federations to support the development of skating at grassroots and elite levels, fostering talent across various countries.
In addition to competitive events, the ISU promotes education and training for coaches, officials, and athletes to enhance the overall quality of the sport. The organisation also encourages fair play and sportsmanship, placing a strong emphasis on athlete welfare and development.
The ISU has numerous member federations representing countries worldwide, facilitating collaboration and communication between different regions. The governing body also engages in initiatives to promote the sport, attract new audiences, and ensure the longevity and sustainability of ice skating disciplines.
