Santa Clara Swim Club

• Youth and Early Career: Spitz was born and raised in California and moved to Santa Clara to join the Santa Clara Swim Club's youth academy. He made his first national record at the age of 10.

Indiana University

• Early Success: Spitz joined Indiana University in 1968. Under the guidance of Doc Counsilman, he developed into one of the world's best swimmers, winning eight NCAA titles, and his first Olympic gold medals in 1968.

Munich Olympics
