Dearica Hamby attended Marietta High School and Norcross High School in Georgia. She was also a softball player before focusing on basketball. At Norcross, she helped the team win a 5A state title in 2011.

Hamby played college basketball at Wake Forest University from 2011 to 2015. Over four seasons, she became the most productive player in program history by finishing as Wake Forest’s all-time leader in points and rebounds. She recorded 1,801 points, 1,021 rebounds, 44 double-doubles, and ranked near the top of several Wake Forest career categories, including field goal percentage, free throws, blocks, and games played.

Her junior season in 2013–14 was a major statistical year. Hamby averaged 22.0 points and 11.0 rebounds, becoming the first Wake Forest player to lead the ACC in both categories in the same season. She followed with another 20-point scoring season as a senior, averaging 20.3 points and 10.7 rebounds. She was named First-team All-ACC in both 2014 and 2015.

In 2015, the San Antonio Stars selected Hamby sixth overall in the WNBA Draft. She played for the Stars before the franchise relocated and became the Las Vegas Aces in 2018. With Las Vegas, Hamby became one of the league’s strongest reserve forwards. In 2019, she averaged 11.0 points and 7.6 rebounds and won WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year. That same season, she made a long game-winning shot against the Chicago Sky in a single-elimination playoff game after stealing a pass in the final seconds.

Hamby won Sixth Woman of the Year again in 2020. She remained with the Aces through the 2022 season and was part of the franchise’s first WNBA championship team. In January 2023, she was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks. With Los Angeles, her role expanded, and by 2024 and 2025 she was producing some of the strongest numbers of her WNBA career.

In 2024, Hamby became a WNBA All-Star for the third time and won the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. In 2025, she averaged a career-best 18.4 points per game on 57.2 percent shooting with the Sparks. She also joined Vinyl BC for the inaugural season of Unrivaled.
