DeWanna Bonner attended Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Alabama, where she was named a McDonald’s All-American, WBCA All-American, USA Today Junior All-American, and Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year. Her high school performance made her one of the top recruits in the country before she enrolled at Auburn University.

At Auburn, Bonner became a key player from her freshman season. In 2005–06, she led the Tigers in scoring with 13.5 points per game, becoming the first Auburn freshman since 1980–81 to lead the team in scoring. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and continued to develop as a scorer and rebounder.

Her college career peaked in 2008–09, when she averaged 21.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She was named SEC Player of the Year, earned multiple All-America honors, and set Auburn’s single-season scoring record with 716 points. She finished her college career with 2,162 points and 1,047 rebounds.

Bonner entered the WNBA in 2009 as the fifth overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury. She played 34 games as a rookie, averaging 11.2 points and 5.8 rebounds, and helped the Mercury win the WNBA championship. From 2009 to 2011, she won three consecutive WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year awards.

In 2012, Bonner moved into a larger offensive role and averaged 20.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She remained a central part of Phoenix’s rotation and helped the team win another WNBA title in 2014. That year, she contributed 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists in the title-clinching game.

Bonner missed the 2017 WNBA season due to pregnancy and returned in 2018, earning an All-Star selection. After the 2019 season, Phoenix traded her to the Connecticut Sun in exchange for three first-round draft picks. With Connecticut, she remained a high-level scorer and rebounder, earning All-Star selections in 2021, 2023, and 2024.

In 2025, Bonner signed with the Indiana Fever. During her Fever debut, she became the third-leading scorer in WNBA history, passing Tina Thompson. She was later waived by Indiana and returned to the Phoenix Mercury in July 2025. She re-signed with Phoenix in 2026.

Bonner has also played overseas in the Czech Republic, Spain, Russia, China, Israel, Hungary, and Turkey, including clubs such as BK Brno, Baloncesto Rivas, Perfumerías Avenida, Nadezhda Orenburg, USK Praha, Dynamo Kursk, Elitzur Ramla, KSC Szekszárd, and Çukurova Basketbol.

International Careerarrow

Bonner first represented the United States at youth level. She joined the U.S. women’s youth team in 2006 and won the FIBA Americas Under-20 Championship for Women. She also won the FIBA Under-21 World Championship for Women in 2007.

In 2018, Bonner received a Macedonian passport and became eligible to represent North Macedonia. She later played for the North Macedonia national team during EuroBasket Women 2023 qualification. In her first game for North Macedonia in 2021, she recorded 11 points and 9 rebounds in a win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Her international profile therefore includes both U.S. youth national team success and senior national-team representation for North Macedonia. In addition to national-team competition, her long overseas club career has made her a regular participant in European basketball competitions.
