Following high school, Pondexter attended Rutgers University. From 2002 to 2006, she helped elevate the Scarlet Knights into one of the nation's strongest programs. Rutgers posted a 97–22 record during her playing career, won Big East Conference championships in 2005 and 2006, and advanced to four NCAA Tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2005. The 2007 season marked a major milestone in her career. Alongside Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor, Pondexter helped lead Phoenix to the WNBA championship.
